DataViz4Good Initiative

Viz for Social Good and 10x Impact Labs are partnering to support Indian non-profits in harnessing the power of data visualization to drive meaningful change.

Why Data Visualization Matter

In today’s data-driven world, data visualizations  are essential for gaining insights, improving decision-making, and maximizing impact. However, many non-profits struggle to harness their data effectively. The Dashboard4Good Initiative aims to bridge this gap by making high-quality data visualization accessible to non-profits, helping them transform raw data into actionable insights.

Data visualization converts complex information into clear, impactful stories that drive awareness, engagement, and action. By presenting insights in an accessible and visually compelling manner, non-profits can:

  • Track and improve progress and impact of your programs and initiatives

  • Better communicate your mission and impact.

  • Highlight achievements and uncover trends.

  • Inspire stakeholders—from donors to policymakers—to support your cause.

About the Partners

  • Viz for Social Good is a global community of over 1,500 data visualization volunteers passionate about supporting social impact efforts through data insights.

  • 10x Impact Labs helps non-profits leverage Technology and Data to improve and scale their impact.

What’s on Offer

Through this collaboration, Two selected Indian non-profits will receive dedicated support for data dashboarding and visualization from Viz for Social Good volunteers in 2025–26. The selected non-profits will:

  • Define Your Needs: Share your Data Dashboard requirements with the Viz for Social Good Team as part of your onboarding.

  • Get Tailored Dashboards: Volunteers will create data visualizations based on your data. Receive multiple dashboards within 1–2 months.

  • Review and Refine: Access all visualizations and select three projects for a live debrief, where volunteers will present their work.

  • Choose the Best: Finalize the most effective dashboard to enhance your organization’s impact.

This initiative will equip non-profits with meaningful insights, empowering them to make informed decisions and amplify their impact.

Please Note: Volunteers will create new dashboards from scratch and won’t be able to work directly on the non-profit’s existing live data platform or warehouse. This could be explored later as a side project, depending on volunteer availability.

Non-profits, if shortlisted, will be required to provide the open data and also assign a point of contact for this duration of  the engagement.

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is ideal for Non-profits that:

  • Have open data they are willing to share.

  • Work on issues aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • Could benefit from compelling data visualizations to track progress and showcase impact.

Application Process

This initiative is free of cost—however, with only two slots available for 2025–26, the selection process will involve two stages:

➡️ Stage 1: Fill out a short application form to express interest.
➡️ Stage 2: Six shortlisted non-profits will be invited for a detailed evaluation.

  • Available in an easy-to-use format (like CSV or Excel).

  • Shared with minimal restrictions (sometimes just needing credit).

2. What Non-Profits Should Keep in Mind When Providing Open Data?

Privacy and Consent

  • Remove personal or sensitive information.

  • Data that has been stripped of personally identifiable information (e.g., case study numbers instead of names).

  • Location data should be at a general level (e.g., city or region rather than specific addresses).

  • Keep data clean, consistent, and updated.

  • Provide context (how it was collected, what it represents).

Open Formats

  • Use a clear license (e.g., Creative Commons).

  • State if credit is required when others use the data.

Accessibility and Documentation

  • Make it easy to find and understand.

  • Include simple notes or instructions.

  • Include a data dictionary that defines all the fields (ie if your data contains acronyms, define them

3. What happens after an Org is Selected?

Need defining

Dashboard creation

  • Volunteers will have access to the dataset straight after the kickoff meeting and will create data visualization using the tool of their choice

Feedback & iteration

  • It is  is purely optional

  • VFSG Team encourages the volunteers to ask questions and send drafts in their internal slack - volunteers give feedback to each others too

  • VFSG Team also encourages the org to answer and be very proactive in slack - but there is no expectation from volunteers to create multi drafts and send them to the org for review/approval

Finalize & deploy

  • When the volunteers have completed their visualization, they will submit it in VFSG’s form (shared to the org)

  • Volunteers will promote their work on social media, but there is no deployment - volunteers use the tool they want (github, tableau public, python, R, dropbox..)
